BRAZOSPORT INTERDISCIPLINARY RESIDENCY
A visual art project translating jazz improvisation
into layered digital artworks, where sound, color,
and memory meet.
OVERVIEW
Seeing Sound / Hearing Color is a body of digital visual artworks
developed from the practice of jazz pianist, composer, improviser,
and visual artist Hank Hehmsoth. The works translate musical
ideas—rhythm, harmony, gesture, texture, and spontaneous
invention—into layered abstract images.
Each piece becomes a visual residue of listening and performance
rather than an illustration of music. The result is a conversation
between sound and image, where color, line, and form carry the
energy and structure of improvisation.
This project connects composition, performance, technology,
and visual art—creating a self-guided experience that invites
viewers to both see and hear the creative process.

jazz compositions or recordings associated with each piece.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Seeing Sound / Hearing Color transforms music, memory,
gesture, and improvisation into visual artifacts. Each
artwork is a trace of sound—a digital remnant of the
creative process.
The optional QR-code listening component allows
travelers and viewers to hear the original music
associated with each image, turning the exhibition
into a self-guided encounter with Austin’s contemporary
jazz culture.
These works honor Austin’s layered creative history while
imagining how art, music, and digital access can shape
more immersive public experiences.
